Travel Run \\ ICELAND #2 – Six Days around Reykjavík (Part 1)

In meinem ersten Post über unsere Island-Reise Anfang April 2016 habe ich euch schon über unsere Planung und Vorbereitung berichtet. Unsere sechs Tage in Island verbrachten wir im Hotel Skuggi in Reykjavík und buchten verschiedene Tagestouren bei unterschiedlichen Anbietern. Hier der erste Teil meines Reisebericht:

In my first post about our Iceland trip early April 2016, I already told you about our planning and preparation. During our six days in Iceland we stayed at the Hotel Skuggi in Reykjavík and booked several day trips at different providers. Here is the first part of my trip travel report:



Tag 1:  Reykjavík \\ Day 1:  Reykjavík

Wir landeten nachmittags und kamen problemlos mit einem Flughafen-Transfer von Grayline vom Flughafen Keflavík direkt an unser Hotel, im Zentrum der Hauptstadt Reykjavík. Während der Fahrt konnten wir die neue ungewohnte Landschaft bestaune. Moosbedeckte Vulkanfelder, weite baumlose Landschaften und in der Ferne Berge, Gletscher und aufsteigende Rauch von warmen Thermalquellen.
Nach dem Einchecken und dem ersten Bestaunen unseres Hotelzimmers, erkundeten wir die Nachbarschaft unseres Hotels.
Eigentlich hatten wir für den Abend noch eine Nordlichter Tour bei SternaTravel gebucht, jedoch viel diese aus, da Wolken die Sicht störten.

Our plane landed in the afternoon and we came easily with the airport transfer from Gray Line from Keflavík airport directly to our hotel, in the center of the capital Reykjavik . During the trip, we could gaze the new unfamiliar landscape. Mossy volcanic fields, wide, treeless landscapes and in the distance mountains, glaciers and rising smoke from hot springs.
After checking in we explored the neighborhood of our hotel .
Actually we had booked a Northern Lights tour with SternaTravel for the evening, but because of the cloudy sky it was cancelled.

Tag 2: Reykjavík + Nordlichter \\ Day 2:  Reykjavík + Northern Lights

Wir starteten den Tag mit einem leckeren Frühstück und machten uns zu Fuß auf dem Weg Reykjavík zu erkunden. Mit meinem Lonley Planet Führer in der Hand steuerten wir zielgerichtet die ersten Sehenswürdigkeit unweit unseres Hotels an: Die Wikingerschiffs Skulptur „Solfar“, das moderne Konzerthaus Harpa, den Stadtsee Tjörnin mit dem Rathaus, die Shoppingstraße Laugavegur, das Parlamentsgebäude und der alte Hafen. Auf dem Kirchturm von Hallgrímskirkja, genossen wir den Blick über die Stadt und seiner kleinen bunten Häuschen. Im Osten konnte man die Rauchschwaden der blauen Lagune erkennen und im Norden hatten wir einen klare Sicht auf die schneebedeckten Berge und Gletscher von Island.

We started the day with a delicious breakfast and set out to explore on foot the city Reykjavík. With my Lonely Planet guide in hand we headed to the first sightseeing spot not far from our hotels: The Viking ship sculpture "Solfar" , the modern Harpa, the town lake Tjörnin with the town hall, the shopping street Laugavegur, the Parliament House and the Old Port. On the bell tower of the famouse church Hallgrímskirkja, we enjoyed the view over the city and its small colorful houses. In the east you could see the smoke billowing blue lagoon and in the north, we had a clear view to the snow-capped mountains and glaciers of Iceland.

Zum Mittagssnack gab es den „weltbesten“ Hotdog bei dem kleinen Imbissladen Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, wo schon Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen und weitere Größen gegessen haben. Ich bin nicht der große Hotdog-Esser daher habe ich nicht viele Vergleichsmöglichkeiten, ich fand den Hot Dog in Ordnung, aber nichts Besonderes.Den Nachmittag verbrachten wir im Museum „Whales of Iceland“, um uns über die verschiedenen Walarten um Island zu informieren, da wir am vierten Tag eine Walbeobachtungstour geplant haben. 

For lunch snack  we had the called "world's best" hot dog at the snack shop Baejarins Beztu Pylsur where even Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen and other famouse people have eaten. I'm not the big hot dog eater so I do not have many comparisons, I think the Hot Dog okay, but nothing special.We spent the afternoon at the Museum "Whales of Iceland" to inform us about the different species of whales around Iceland, as we have planned a whale watching tour on the fourth day.

Den Tag ließen wir am „Nauthólsvík Beach“ ausklingen, ein kleines Thermalbad (echter Geheimtipp!!! Danke Audur von IheartReykjavik) direkt am Strand im Süden der Stadt. Während mein Freund und ich im wohlig warmen Thermalwasser einweichten, hüpfen so verrückte Isländer wirklich in den gerade mal 3 Grad kalten Atlantik. Das soll anscheinend abhärten – definitiv nichts für mich.

We left the day at the "Nauthólsvík Beach", a small Spa (a really secret tip !!! Thanks to Audur of IheartReykjavik) right on the beach south of the city. While my boyfriend and I laying around in the pleasantly warm thermal water, some really crazy Icelanders  jumped in the just 3 degrees cold Atlantic ocean. That should be healthy – but definitely not for me.

Abends um 21 Uhr wurden wir von SternaTravel im Hotel zur Nordlicht Tour abgeholt. Wir fuhren mit einem Bus ca. 2 Stunden Richtung Norden. Wir mussten die Zeit der langen Dämmerung welche Anfang April von 19.30 bis fast 23.00 Uhr dauert, überbrücken, da man die Nordlichter natürlich erst bei vollkommenen Dunkelheit erblicken kann.Erst bei unserem zweiten „Beobachtungspunkt“ auf einer Ebene, erahnten unserer Reiseführer leichte Nordlichter Richtung Nordosten. Wir fuhren noch ein Stück in die Richtung zum nächsten Beobachtungspunkt. Fast um ein Uhr Morgens wurden die Nordlichter endlich stark genug, dass auch wir ungeübten Nordlichtjäger die Lichter im Himmel erblicken konnten. Polarlichter entstehen, wenn elektrisch geladene Teilchen des Sonnenwinds aus der Magnetosphäre auf Sauerstoff- und Stickstoffatome in den oberen Schichten der Erdatmosphäre treffen und diese ionisieren. Je stärker diese Effekt, desto deutlicher werden die Lichter. An jedem Abend hatten wir Lichter in der Stärke zwischen 3-4 (von maximal 10). 
Auch wenn das Polarlicht auf meinen Fotos in schönen Farben leuchten, so kann das menschliche Auge diese Farben bei dieser Aurora-Stärke nicht wahrnehmen. Die Nordlichter sehen eher aus wie weiß-graue Schleier im Himmel. Auch die typischen Bewegung, welche man immer auf Videos sieht, sind in Wirklichkeit Zeitraffern. Die Aurora bewegen sich gaaanz langsam am Himmel, werden stärker, verschleiern, verblassen oder krümmen sich. 

In the evening at 21 o'clock we were picked up from the hotel for the Northern Lights Tour from SternaTravel. The bus took us about 2 hours north. We had to bridgeover the time of long twilight which is on early April from 19:30 to 23:00 , becourse you only can see the northern lights in complete darkness. At our second "observation point" our travel guide saw softly, not really visible Northern Lights in the northeast. We drove up in the direction to the next observation point. Almost at one o'clock in the morning the northern lights were finally strong enough that also we inexperienced Northern lights hunters could see the lights in the sky. Auroras occur when charged particles from the solar wind from the magnetosphere encounter oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the upper layers of the atmosphere and ionize. The stronger this effect, the clearer will be the lights. At that evening we had lights in strength between 3-4 (out of 10). Although the auroral lights in my photos are really colourful, so the human eye can not perceive these colors at this Aurora-strength. The northern lights look more like white-gray haze in the sky. The typical movement which one always sees on video, are in reality time lapse. The Aurora move veeery slowly in the sky, become stronger, disguise, fade or bend.

Ich fand es sehr faszinieren und konnte gar nicht genug davon bekommen. Jedoch waren viele unsere Mitreisenden sehr enttäuscht, da viele einfach diese bunten Bilder im Kopf hatten. Ein anderes Problem war, dass viele Touristen entweder keine gute Kamera hatten oder nicht wussten wie sie diese Einstellen mussten um die Lichter „einzufangen“. 
Unsere Reiseführer waren sehr bemüht jedem zu helfen und für uns die besten Beobachtungspunkten zu finden. Mein Tipp dennoch, bitte vorher die Kameraeinstellungen „üben“, es gibt viele Blogs und Videos die einem dabei helfen. Die Feinanpassung kann dann vor Ort noch eingestellt werden. Außerdem sollte man durch die hohe Belichtungszeit, welche eingestellt werden muss ein Stativ mitgebracht werden. Ich hatte meines leider vergessen und so musste ich meine ISO-Wert ganz noch oben drehen wodurch nun meinen Bilder ein hohes Bildflimmern haben. 
Als wir um halb drei morgens wieder im Hotel waren, war ich sehr glücklich, dass wir das Glück hatten noch im April Polarlichter sehen zu können. 

I found it very fascinating and could not get enough of it. However, many of our fellow travelers were very disappointed, because many simply had these colorful images in the head. Another problem was that many tourists either had no good cameras did not know how they had to prepare the settings "catch" the lights with the camera. Our guides were very eager to help each with the camera settings and  try to find the best observation points for us. My tip yet, please before going to iceland "practice" the camera settings, there are many blogs and videos that a help. The fine adjustment can then be adjusted on site than. In addition, you should bring a tripod because of the the high shutter speed, which must be set. Unfortunately I had forgotten mine and so I had my ISO speed turning quite high why now my images have now a high flicker. 
When we were  got back  to our hotel at half past two in the morning, I was very happy that we were lucky to still be able to see in April auroras. 

Tag 3: Lavahöhle & Goldener Kreis \\ Day 3: Lava Cave & Golden Cycle

Der nächste Tag begann viel zu früh, nachdem wir am Abend davor Dank unsere Nordlichter Tour erst recht spät Schlaf gefunden haben. Ein netter und super motivierte Mitarbeiter von ExtremeIceland holte und am Hotel ab. Mit sieben weiteren Touristen machten wir uns in einem Kleinbus auf den Weg zu unsere Lavahöhlen-Wanderung.
An der Höhle angekommen erhielten wir alle einen Helm, eine Taschenlampe und Spikes für unsere Schuhe. Und los ging das Abenteuer: Wer sich unter Lavahöhlen Wanderung einen netten Spaziergang durch eine weite, große Höhle vorstellt, hat das Wort „Extreme“ bei ExtremeIceland übersehen. Der Einstieg in de Höhle war schon ein echtes Erlebnis. An einem Seil kletterten bzw. rutschten wir in die Dunkelheit. Der Boden am Eingangsbereich war komplett mit spiegelglatten Eis belegt. Weiter in der Höhle wich das Eis der Feuchtigkeit. In der Höhle war es nicht so kalt wie ich dachte. In vollkommener Dunkelheit folgten wir den Strahlen unsere Taschenlampen und Bestaunten die fremdartige Umgebung. Das Lava hinterließ eine beeindruckende Höhe, mit abstrakten Felsgebilden. An vielen Stellen wurde die Decke so niedrig, dass wir nur sehr gebückt, ja fast auf den Knien krabbelnd vorankamen. Auf der Weg war nicht gerade und eben, immer wieder mussten wir über Steinhaufen klettern oder enge Stellen überwinden. Am Ende kamen wir sogar nur auf dem Bauch robbend weiter. Auch wenn die Höhle nicht sooo unglaublich spektakulär war, war es ein einzigartiges und einmaliges Erlebnis (mit Oberschenkelmuskelkater-Garantie ^^). 

The next day started too early, after our long Nothern Lights Tour. A cute and super motivated employees of ExtremeIceland picked us up at the hotel. With seven other tourists we went in a van on the way to our lava caves hike.
Once at the cave, we all received a helmet, flashlight and spikes for our shoes. And the adventure started: Who imagines a nice walk through a wide, large cave under the name “lava caves hike”, has overlooked the word "Extreme" at ExtremeIceland. The entry into de cave was the first real experience. On a rope we climbed and we slipped into the darkness. The floor at the entrance area was completely covered with glassy ice. In the cave gave the ice drained into water. The cave was not as cold as I thought. In complete darkness we followed the beams of our flashlights and marveled at the strange surroundings. The lava left behind an impressive height, with abstract rock formations. In many places the ceiling was so low that we very bent, so were getting almost crawling on their knees. On the way was also not straight and level, again we had to climb over heaps or overcome narrow places. In the end we even came only on the belly crawling on. Although the cave was not sooo incredibly spectacular, it was a unique and incomparable experience (with thigh muscles Guarantee ^^).

Am Nachmittag ging es dann mit Grayline auf die Golden-Ciclye Tour. Der Goldene Kreis umfasst die berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Islands.
Der Bus fuhr erstmal fast eine Stunde bis zur ersten Sehenswürdigkeit dem Thingvellir Nationalpark. Während der Fahrt berichtet uns unser Guide verschiedene historische Ereignisse und  Begebenheiten von Island.Wir fuhren weiter in das Landesinnere und auf die Hocheben von Island, hier lag noch viel mehr Schnee als um Rekjavik.
Die Tour führte uns zunächst zum Thingvellir Nationalpark, in welchem bereits im Jahr 930 das erste europäische Parlament tagte. Hier treffen die tektonischen Platten von Amerika und Europa unter der Erdoberfläche aufeinander. Das die Platten nicht statisch sind sondern sich weiterhin bewegen, ist an den imposante Felsspalten und Risse sichtbar. Jedes Jahr bewegen sich die beiden Platten ca. 1 cm von einander weg.

In the afternoon we went with Grayline on the Golden-Ciclye Tour. The Golden Circle includes the most famous sights of Iceland.The bus drove almost an hour until the first sight the Thingvellir National Park appears. During the trip, the guide told various historical events and incidents of Iceland.We continued driving into the island and on the highlands of Iceland, there was a lot more snow than in Rekjavik. 

The first stop of the tour was at the Thingvellir National Park, in which the first European Parliament met already in 930th. This is where the tectonic plates of America and Europe under the ground splitts. The plates are not static but continue to move, this is visible on the imposing rock crevices and cracks. Every year, the two plates moves about 1 cm away from each other.

Die zweite Sehenswürdigkeit war der große und mächtige Wasserfall Gullfoss, der zu den schönsten und größten Wasserfällen Islands gehört. Der Wasserfall ist wirklich ein beeindruckendes Naturschauspiel. Er besteht aus zwei Stufen, von denen die erste 11m und die zweite 21m Höhe besitzt. Die fast 1010m³/s  Wasser stürzen mit tosendem Lärm und die steile Schlucht hinab und lassen eine spürbare Gischt entstehen. Die weite, tiefen Schlucht und dem noch schneebedeckten Felsen, welche das Wasser mit seiner Kraft schon untersspült hat ist eine wirklich atemberaubende Kulisse.

The second attraction was the great and mighty waterfall Gullfoss, the one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is really an impressive natural spectacle. It consists of two stages, one 11m  ant the second 21m height. The nearly 1010m³ / s water plunge down with thunderous noise and the steep ravine and leave a noticeable spray arise. The wide, deep canyon and the still snow-covered rocks is a truly stunning landscape.

Der letzte Halt war das Heißwassertal Haukadalur. Das Hochtemperatursystem zu Füßen des Rhyolithdoms Laugarfjall weist eine Vielzahl von heißen Quellen auf, wie dem Geysir Strokkur und verschiedener anderer heißen Quellen. Der Strokkur bricht regelmäßig mindestens alle 10 Minuten aus. Daher wartet eine Reihe von Touristen minutenlang am Rande des Geysirs, den Finger immer auf dem Kameraauslöser darauf, dass der Geysir sich zeigt. Die bis zu 15 m Hohe Wasserfontäne ist wirklich ein beeindruckendes Naturschauspiel.
Auf der Fahrt zurück nach Reykjavík fing es dann leicht an zu schneien... 

The last stop was the hotpot area Haukadalur. The high temperature system at the feet of Rhyolithdoms Laugarfjall has a variety of hot springs, such as the geysir Strokkur. The Strokkur breaks regularly at least every 10 minutes. Therefore, a number of tourists always waiting for several minutes on the edge of the geyser, the finger on their cameras until the geyser is shown. The up to 15 m high water fountain is really an impressive natural spectacle.On the drive back to Reykjavík it started snowing ...

In den letzten drei Tagen die noch folgen, machten wir uns auf die Suche nach Wale, fuhren die Südküsten entlang und besuchten die berühmte Blaue Lagune. Ob sich das alles wirklich gelohnt hat, welche Touren ich wirklich nur empfehlen kann und was man in Island nicht unbedingt machen muss - im zweiten Teil meines Berichtes.

In the last three days that follows, we went in search of whales, drove across the southern coast and visited the famous Blue Lagoon. Whether all this has really paid off, which tours I really can  recommend and what one does not have to necessarily do in Iceland – all in the second part of my report.
