Travel Run \ ICELAND #3 – Six Days around Reykjavík (Part 2)

In unseren ersten drei Tagen in Island haben wir neben Reykjavík und eineabenteuerliche Lava-Höhlentour, die Must-See Sehenswürdigkeiten des GoldenenKreises bestaunt und Polarlichter gejagt. Was sollten wir in unseren letzten drei Tagen also noch erleben? Ich hätte selbst nicht gedacht, dass es NOCH besser werden könnte....

During our first three days in Iceland, we have admired alongside Reykjavík and anadventurous lava cave tour, the must-see sights of the Golden Circle and chasedauroras. What should we meet in our last three experiences so still? I had not even thought that it could be even better…

Tag 4: Wale & Shopping \\ Day 4: Whales & Shopping

Am Mittwoch hatten wir wieder unglaubliches Glück mit dem Wetter, die Sonne strahlte vom Himmel und wir konnten mit guter Sicht und ruhigen Wellengang auf „Walfang“ gehen. Wir hatten uns für die Beobachtungstour von Eldingentschieden, es war reines Bauchgefühl und genau richtig. Maggie unser Tour-Guide, hatte ein unglaublich großes Wal-Wissen. Ich mochte vor allem aber ihre Begeisterung und Enthusiasmus, mit dem Sie den Ausflug zu etwas einzigartigen Erlebnis machte. Zuerst streifte ein Minkwale unseren Weg, er war jedoch nur kurz zu sehen.

On Wednesday we had luck with the weather, the sun shone from the sky and we could go with good visibility and calm seas to "whaling". We had opted for the observation tour of Elding, it was pure gut instinct and the right one. Maggie, our tour guide, had an incredibly large knowledge about Whales. I liked her enthusiasm and motivation with which she made the trip to something really special. First, a minke grazed our way, however, he was seen only briefly.

Dann aber folgte eine echte „Show“. Drei Buckelwale kreisten um unser Schiff, wie als wären Sie neugierig auf uns. Sie spielte an der Wasseroberfläche, drehten sich und winkten uns zu. Einer sprang sogar ganz plötzlich aus dem Wasser. Die Tiere wurden weder von den Booten angelockt noch bedrängt. Als ein weiteres Walbeobachtungsboot auftauchte, wollten wir weiterfahren, um die Wale nicht zu lange zu belästigen. Jedoch schwammen die Buckelwale so nach an unseren Boot, dass wir die Motoren nicht starten konnten, aus Angst die Wale zu verletzen. Am Schluss mussten wir den Wale aus Zeitgründen schweren Herzens den Rücken kehren. Einer winkte uns zum Abschied sogar zu. Es war ein unglaublicher Vormittag! Ich war ganz wusselig vor Glück und wäre am liebsten nochmal raus.

Then a real "show" followed. Three humpback whales circled our ship, such as if they were curious about us. They played at the water surface, turned and waved to us. One even jumped suddenly out of the water. The animals were neither attracted nor harassed by the boats. As another whale watching boat showed up, we wanted to continue, that we not bother the whales too long. However, the humpback whales swam so according to our boat that we could not start the engines, for fear of hurting the whales. At the end we had to turn his back on the whales for reasons of time with a heavy heart. One waved goodbye to us. It was an incredible morning! I was soooo happy that we had such a amazing tour and would like do to it every time again.

Reykjavík

Den Nachmittag verbrachten wir in der Innenstadt von Reykjavík und stöberten durch die Einkaufsstraßen. Shopping ins Reykjavík ist zwar teuer, aber auch ein einzigartiges Erlebnis, warum? Kein H&M, kein Zara, kein Mango, kein Deichmann - keine großen Konzernriesen, die jede Großstadt gleich aussehen lassen. Stattdessen kleine Boutiquen mit ausgewählten oft ungewöhnlichen Kleidung und Designerstücken. Jeder Laden war einzigartig und individuelle. Ich kaufte mir eine schöne handgefertigte Kette aus verschiedenen Zahnrädern und eine Tasche in Cupcake-Form, in einem kleinen Laden für Niedlichkeits-Menschen (wie ich). In einem Store welcher isländische Designer mit Vintage und Geschenkideen verbindet, kaufte ich ein Reisekoffer-Aufkleber-Set. Außerdem gab es natürlich auch einen Islandpulli, Made-in-Iceland aus echter isländischer Schafswolle. Mir gefällt der Stil der Isländer. Ein Mix aus cleanen, minimalistischen Skandi-Stlye á la Stockholm mit einem individuellen Touch á la London. Einen halben Tag Shopping in Reykjavík sollte man auf alle Fälle einplanen.

We spent the afternoon in downtown Reykjavík and rummaged through the shopping streets. Shopping in Reykjavík is expensive, but also a unique experience, why? No H & M, no Zara, no mango, no Deichmann - no big corporate giants that make every city look identical. Instead, small boutiques with selected, often unusual clothes and designer pieces. Each store was unique and individual. I bought a beautiful handmade necklace of various gears and a bag in cupcake form, in a small shop for Cuteness people (like me). In a store which combines Icelandic designer with vintage and gift ideas, I bought a suitcase sticker set. It also, of course, shop a Iceland sweatshirt, Made-in-Iceland from Icelandic spirit sheep wool. I like the style of the Icelanders: A mix of clean, minimalist Skandi-Stlye á la Stockholm with an individual touch á la London. You should definitely plan a half day shopping in Reykjavík.

Tag 5: Südküste, Wasserfälle & Gletscher Lagune \\ Day 5: South Coast, waterfalls and glacial lagoon

Ein Foto hat mich in einem Island Reisekatalog so beeindruckt, dass wann immer ich an Island dachte, ich das Bild vor mir hatte: die in allen Blau-Farben glitzernde Gletscherlagune Jökulsárlón.Und somit war für mich von Beginn an klar, da müssen wir hin, komme was wolle! Das Problem: Die Gletscherbucht liegt fast am anderen Ende Islands an der Südostküste, ca. 370 km von der Hauptstadt entfernt. Geführte Touren an die Lagune waren für zwei Tage mit Übernachtung angesetzt. Jedoch hatten wir unser Hotel schon für alle 6 Nächte gebucht und hatten auch nicht mehr die Zeit zwei Tage dafür zu verplanen. Außerdem wurden viele Touren erst ab Mitte Mai angeboten. Nach langer Suche fand ich jedoch eine Tour bei GrayLine.

Dank der lagen Strecke welche wir zur Lagune zurücklegen mussten begann die Tour sehr früh am morgen. Wir hatten unglaubliches Glück mit dem Wetter – Sonnenschein, blauer Himmel und klare Sicht. Mit einem Busfahrer und Willy unserem isländischen Tourguide, sausten wir die Südküsten entlang. Vorbei an kleine Dörfchen, rauchenden Feldern, Gletscher und Vulkanen. Auf der linken Seite erhebte sich bald eine steile Felsformation und auf der rechten Seite Strand und Meer.

Einen kleinen Stopp machten wir beim Gletscher-Vulkan Eyjafjallajökull. 2010 erlangte der Vulkan weltweite Berühmtheit, da sein Ausbruch den europäischen Flugverkehr tagelang lahm legte. Heute ruht der Vulkan wieder unter einem Gletscher.

One picture of Iceland has impressed me so much, that whenever I thought of Iceland, I had the image in front of me: the glittering in all blue color Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.And so fit was clear from the beginning, we have to go there! The problem: The Glacier lagoon is located almost at the other side of Islands on the southeast coast, about 370 km away from the capital. Guided tours on the lagoon were scheduled for two days with an overnight stay. However, we had booked our hotel already for 6 nights and had no more time to schedule two days for this. In addition, many tours are offered from mid-May. However, after a long search I found a tour with Gray Line.

Thanks to the long way, we started the tour to the lagoon very early in the morning. We were incredibly lucky with the weather - sunshine, blue skies and clear view. With a bus driver and Willy our Icelandic tour guide, we whizzed along the southern coasts. Passing small villages, fuming fields, glaciers and volcanoes. On the left side soon a steep rock formation appeared and on the right the beach and sea.

At the Glacier volcano Eyjafjallajökull we made a quick stopp. At 2010 the volcano got worldwide popularity since its outbreak lame the European air traffic for days. Today the volcano again rests under a glacier.

Danach machten wir Halt am Wasserfall Skógafoss – einfach zauberhaft wie das Wasser in Verbindung mit der Sonne gleich zwei Regenbogen entstehen ließ.

Wir fuhren weiter die Ringstraße Richtung Osten, die leere Straße vor und hinter uns. An einem großen Lavafeld machen wir einen kurzen Stopp. Über den spitzen Lavasteinen hat sich weiches Moos gesetzt. Hier durch zu wandern ist jedoch nicht ganz ungefährlich. Unter den Lavafeldern befinden sich oft große Tunnelsysteme (welche wir im Tag zwei schon genauer erkundet haben) und die poröse Lavadecke kann schnell einstürzen – Also besser auf den vorgetrampelten Wegen bleiben!

We drove further on ring road towards the east on empty street. At a large lava field, we make a short break. Above the sharp lava rocks soft moss has set. Here, however, to walk through is not completely harmless. Among the Lava fields are often large tunnel systems (which we explored on our second day)) and the porous lava can collapse quickly – So better stay on the paths!

Für eine längere Mittagspause machten wir halt an Europas größtem Gletscher: Vatnajökull. Mit der Größe von 50 km von West nach Ost und 100 von Nord nach Süd, bedeckt das Eis 8% von Island.

For a longer lunch break we stopped at Europe's largest glacier: Vatnajökull. With the size of 50 km from east to west and 100 from north to south, it covers 8% of Iceland.

Wir fuhren am Gletscher entlang bis zu unserem Ziel, die Gletscherlagune Gletscherlagune Jökulsárlón. Hier trifft ein Arm des Vatnajökull ans Meer. Je nach Gezeit fließen die Einbrocken entweder ins Meer hinaus oder in die Lagune hinein. Da es noch recht früh im Jahr war, war die Lagune noch größtenteils vereist, im Sommer kann man mit Booten in die Lagune fahren und das Jahrhunderte alte Eis ganz nah sehen. Durch die Sonne glitzert das Eis in allen Blau- und Türkistönen – einfach nur atemberaubend. Das knirschende Geräusch der Eisplatten wenn diese das Wasser auseinander oder ineinander schwemmt habe ich heute noch im Ohr. Kein Wunder das Hollywood die Lagune oft als Filmset verwendet, zu sehen bei Batman, James Bond und Tomb Raider.

We drove along the glacier to our destination, the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here an arm of the Vatnajökull meet the sea. Depending on the tide, the ice flow either into the sea or in the lagoon. Since it was still early in the year, the lagoon was mostly iced, in summer you can row a boat in the lagoon and get closer to the centuries-old ice. Through the sun the ice glistens in all shades of blue and turquoise - just stunning. I still can hear the the grinding noise of the ice sheets. No wonder that Hollywood often used the lagoon as a film set, as seen on Batman, James Bond and Tomb Raider.

Danach gingen wir noch an den schwarzen Lavastrand, wo das Meer die ausgeschwemmten Eisberge an den Strand spült. Durch den starken Wellengang schnellt das Wasser an den Eisbergen ab und es ergibt sich ein imposantes Schauspiel zwischen Eis und Wasser.

Then we went to the black lava beach where the sea washes the flushed icebergs to the beach. Due to the strong swell the water rockets from the icebergs and the result is an impressive spectacle between ice and water.

Bei der Rückfahrt machen wir noch Halt bei dem kleinen Dörfchen Vik. Hier konnten wir am schwarzen Lavastrand die imposanten Felsformationen bewundern. Passend zu den leicht mystischen Gebilden finge es an zu regnen…

Unseren letzten Halt machten wir am Wasserfall Seljalandsfoss. Das besondere: Man kann hinter den Wasserfall gehen! Ein wirklich gelungener Schluss eines unglaublichen Tages.

Ich würde diese Tour sofort und jederzeit wieder machen, das nächste Mal jedoch auf zwei Tage verteilt, da es auf der Route noch so viel mehr zu sehen gibt.

I would do this tour immediately and at any time again, but the next time I would spend  two days, as there you can see so much more on the route.

Tag 6: Islandpferde & Blaue Lagune \\ Day 6: Iceland Horses & Blue Lagoon

Am letzten Tag hatten wir leider Pech mit dem Wetter – Regen und eiskalter Wind. Leider habe ich für diesen Tag einen Ausritt auf Islandpferden beiGrayline gebucht. Eines vorab: Das Wetter war wirklich widerlich an diesem Tag und es ist klar, dass weder die Pferde noch die Reiter noch die Guides große Lust hatten über eine Stunde bei strömenden, eiskalten Regen durch die Landschaft zu reiten. Aber dies entschuldigt wirklich nicht, die Erfahrung welche wir an diesem Tag gemacht haben. Wir hatten bis dahin wirklich nur gute Erfahrungen in Island mit unsern Touren gemacht: professionelle, freundliche Guides und gutes Equipment. Aber wo Licht ist muss auch Schatten sein und der Island-Pferde Ausritt war definitiv eine Tour, welche ich im Nachhinein NIE WIEDER buchen würde, selbst wenn das Wetter besser wäre. Ich bin blutige Anfängerin und habe in meinem Leben noch nie auf einem Pferd gesessen und da reicht es einfach nicht mir ein Video vorzuspielen indem mir Jemand in nicht mal 5 Minuten erklärt wie man ein Pferd „lenkt“. Außerdem hätte ich gerne eine größere Beziehungen zu dem Pferd aufbauen möchten. Uns wurde einfach wortlos ein Pferd in die Hand gedrückt ohne nähere Angaben, hätte ich nicht die Initiative ergriffen und nach dem Namen des Pferdes gefragt, hätte ich diese nie erfahren. Auch nach dem Ausritt hätte ich gerne noch etwas mehr Zeit mit dem Pferden verbracht, ein paar Erinnerungsfotos geschossen oder sowas eben. Stattdessen wurden wir gleich von den Pferden „weggescheucht“ und in den Bus gesetzt. Und noch ein Punkt: Es regnet, es hagelt es ist bitter scheiß kalt – also warum, warum wird der Ausritt denn nicht einfach verkürzt? Ich bin ehrlich, ich hatte nach 30 Minuten einfach überhaupt keine Lust mehr. Ich war trotz Regenoverall komplett durchnässt, weder meine Hände noch meine Füße waren zu spüren. Und von der Landschaft hat man auch nicht viel gesehene. Außerdem mussten wir wie so Zirkuspferde hintereinander in einer Reihe stillschweigen reiten. In dieser einen Stunde hätte man doch was über die Pferde oder den Stall erzählen können oder uns zumindest teilweise nebeneinander reiten lassen können. Ich hätte mich wirklich wohler gefühlt wenn ich neben meinem Freund reiten hätte können und mich ein wenig unterhalten. Da wir keine Fotos machen konnten, gibt es hier auch keine. Im Nachhinein bin ich darüber auch ganz froh so kann ich diese Tour beweislos aus unserem Urlaub streichen! J

Wenn ihr also mit dem Gedanken spielt, solche ein Pferde-Ausflug zu machen, kann ich nur raten, diesen spontan und wetterabhängen zu buchen und nur wenn Reiterfahrungen vorhanden sind.

On the last day we had unfortunately bad luck with the weather - rain and cold wind. Unfortunately, I booked a ride on Iceland horses at Gray Line for this day. The weather was really disgusting at this day and it is clear that neither the horse nor the rider nor the guides hat a great desire to ride over an hour in the pouring, freezing rain through the countryside with tourists. But this really does not excuse the bad experience which we have made on this day. We really had a good experience in Iceland with our tours so far: professional, friendly guides and good equipment. But where there is light must also be shadows and Iceland horses ride was definitely a tour, which I would NEVER book in retrospect AGAIN, even if the weather would be better.

I am bloody beginner and have never been in my life on a horse and therefore it is simply not enough to show me a short nearly 5 minutes video to show me how I should “guide” a horse. Also, I would like to build up a relationship with the horse even it is just for one ride. The guides just gave us a horse without a giving any details, If I would not have taken the initiative and asked for the name of the horse, I would know even this. Even after the ride I would have liked to spend a little more time with the horses, shot a couple of photos or something. Instead, we have been "shooed away" from the horses and set back into the tourist bus. And another point: It rains, it hails, it is bitterly cold - so why, why didn’t they shortened the trip? I am honest, after 30 minutes I have no more desire. I was completely wet and did not feel my hands nor my feet anymore. And of the landscape we also did not seen much. We also had to ride behind one another remain silent in a row like circus horses. In that one hour they could tell us something about the horses or the stable or allow us to ride partly adjacent to us at least. I would have felt more comfortable when I could have ride beside my boyfriend. Since we could not take pictures, there is also non. In hindsight, I'm happy with that so I can cancel this tour from our vacation! J So if you plan to do such a horse-trip, I can only guess, to book this spontaneous, depending on the weather and only if you have any riding experiences.

Die Rettung des Tages war der Besuch der Blauen Lagune! Viele raten davon ab, da diese überfüllt und überteuert sei. Teuer ja, überfüllt im April definitiv nein. Der See mit einer Fläche von etwa 5000 Quadratmetern gehört zum nahe liegenden Geothermalkraftwerkes Svartsengi, welches 240 °C heißes Wasser aus einer Tiefe von etwa 2000 Meter zur Stromerzeugung an die Oberfläche pumpt. Danach fließt das abgekühlte Wasser von etwa 37 bis 42 °C in das nebenstehende Lavafeld und bildet die Blaue Lagune. Die darin enthaltende Kieselsäure erzeugt die charakteristische blaue Farbe. Für dieses Schmuddel-Wetter war der Ausflug zur Lagune einfach perfekt. Durch die kalte Außentemperatur lag eine dicke Nebelschicht über der großen Lagune und so hatte man oft das Gefühl das man ganz alleine ist. Am besten hat mir allerdings die Poolbar mitten in der Lagune gefallen :D Island Bierchen oder ein Früchte Smoothie schlürfen im warmen Wasser – ein Traum!

Ein gelungener und entspannter Schluss unserer Island-Reise.

Am nächsten Tag ging es dann früh am Morgen mit dem Flieger zurück nach Deutschland...

For this dreary weather of the trip the lagoon was just perfect. Through the cold outside temperature, a thick layer of fog lay over the large lagoon and we often had the feeling that we are alone. The best for me was the bar in the middle of the lagoon :D sipping Iceland beer or a fruit smoothie in the warm water - a dream! A successful and relaxed end of our Iceland trip.

Diese sechs Tage in Island waren wirklich wunderschön und haben einen bleibenden Eindruck und wundervolle Erinnerung hinterlassen. Wir wollen unbedingt wieder nach Island, dieses Mal zwei Wochen wenn es schon wärmer ist, wenn die Tage lang sind und die Landschaften saftig grün. Dann mieten wir uns ein Auto und fahren die ganze Ringstraße einmal über die Insel … ja Island sieht uns wieder.

These six days Iceland were really beautiful and have left a lasting impression and wonderful memories. We really want to return to Iceland, next time for two weeks when it is warmer and the days are long and you can see the scenery in lush green. Then we rent a car and drive all the ring road once over the island ... yes Iceland you will see us again
